What Size Carport Do I Need? A Sizing Guide for East Texas Trucks, Boats, and RVs

Most carport regrets come down to one problem. The structure is too small for the vehicle underneath it.

A truck bed hangs out the back. A boat motor sits exposed past the last post.

The solution is simple. Measure first, then choose your carport size. This guide covers the actual dimensions of vehicles East Texans own most.

Start With Accurate Measurements

Never estimate. Measure every vehicle you plan to cover.

Record three numbers for each one. Measure the overall length from bumper to bumper. Measure the width with the mirrors extended. Then measure the height to the tallest point on the roof.

For RVs, the tallest point is usually an air conditioning unit or antenna. For boats, it may be a windshield, T-top, or trolling motor.

Also consider future needs. Many owners eventually add a second truck, a utility trailer, or a side-by-side.

Carport Sizes for Full-Size Pickup Trucks

Modern full-size pickups are longer than many buyers realize.

According to Ford’s official F-150 specifications, a SuperCrew with a 5.5-foot box measures 232 inches long. That equals roughly 19.3 feet. The 6.5-foot box version measures about 243.8 inches, or approximately 20.3 feet.

The same truck is 95.7 inches wide with standard mirrors. That is nearly 8 feet.

A carport that is only 20 feet long will not completely cover a long-bed F-150. Part of the truck will remain exposed to sun, rain, and hail.

Width deserves equal attention. You need space to open doors and walk safely between vehicles. Two full-size trucks parked side by side require much more than 16 feet once door clearance is included.

Carport Sizes for Bass Boats and Bay Boats

East Texas is serious fishing country. Lake Fork, Toledo Bend, and Sam Rayburn attract anglers throughout the year.

Discover Boating reports that bass boats range from about 17 to 22 feet long. Bay boats typically measure about 20 to 25 feet.

Remember that those figures describe the hull only. The trailer tongue and outboard motor add considerable length. Measure the entire rig, from the hitch coupler to the back of the lower unit.

Choosing the Right RV Carport Size

Recreational vehicles require the most careful planning. Height is the deciding measurement.

Camping World notes that Class A motorhomes range from about 25 feet to nearly 45 feet long. Their height typically ranges from about 11 to 13 feet.

Texas law also provides a useful reference point. The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles sets a 14-foot maximum height for all vehicles traveling without a permit.

Leg height determines your clearance at the side openings. Choose a leg height that clears your tallest rooftop accessory, with a comfortable safety margin.

Roof design matters for long RV covers, too. Vertical roof panels shed water faster and carry stronger wind ratings. Review our guide to choosing the right roof style before finalizing your order.

Why Complete Coverage Matters in Texas

A partially covered vehicle is still a vulnerable vehicle.

That exposure becomes expensive during storm season. The NOAA National Severe Storms Laboratory classifies hail as severe once it reaches 1 inch in diameter, about the size of a quarter. Hail from severe thunderstorms commonly falls at 25 to 40 mph.

Any truck bed or boat motor sitting outside the frame absorbs that impact.

Frame strength matters as well. East Texas Carports offers standard 14-gauge framing rated for 120 mph winds. The 12-gauge upgrade is rated for 140 mph. Our metal building gauge guide explains the differences in detail.

Evaluate Your Installation Site

Metal Carport size depends on your property, not just your vehicles.

Measure the open ground where the carport will stand. Check for slopes, overhanging trees, and power lines. Leave room to pull in and turn around.

A level foundation helps the building stay square and properly anchored. Our site preparation guide explains each step.
